Many kinds of divers showed up from miles around to answer this dinner bell

There must be Twitter and Facebook for seabirds, too. In broad daylight a frenzy of feeding birds is hard to hide, but the major portion of the 2019 herring spawn in Yaquina Bay occurred at night — how did all the birds know?

As other videos here attest, thousands of surf scoters certainly got the message, but they were far from the only ones. Harlequins, buffleheads, scaups, goldeneyes, mergansers and more must all be subscribers to “The Seabird Daily News.” Although greatly outnumbered by the scoters, many kinds of feathered divers showed up, and all found a seat at this feast.
